Celeste Aoki: Diary Entry 13

March 25, 2013

Dear Mom,

I’m home mom. Auntie Acacia and I moved back into the house. But, I’m sorry to say that it’s over. This is my last diary entry. I didn’t think I could experience anything worse than the day you died. But mom, what happened two days ago will stay with me for the rest of my life. I cannot sleep. I have tried, again, and again. And when I finally manage to drift away, I see her face. Darkstream. I see her chasing me, or killing my friends, or… I don’t even know how to explain what happened, how she lost control like that. They say her mutant blood mixed with the Extremis and caused that catastrophe. Either way it was a horrible experience, and I lived through it. Everyone on the news is calling it the Dark Day. Suiting. 174 people died in Eileen’s fires. She also killed Quartermain, Maria Hill, Jocasta, Vision, Agent Rice… Some of the worst ones were Allyson and Director Westbrook. Allyson took a hit for Director Westbrook, and poor Director Westbrook sacrificed himself to stop her in the end. I guess they’re finally together again now. But the worst is probably Harry. Auntie Acacia is ruined. She won’t talk to anyone. She has nightmares as well (I know, because when I can’t sleep, she’s tossing and turning and blurting names). Every day she just sits at the table, and stares. She tries to be there for me. She feeds me, buys me cookies, tries to tell me stories. But she’s hurt. And I don’t just mean the burn on her face, she is emotionally distressed. So much so Nick Fury put her on suicide watch. Truthfully, I think the only reason she hasn’t yet is because of me. And if my presence keeps her alive, then I’ll stay with her forever. Either way, I just want to say goodbye mom. I finally put you to rest. I will see you again one day, when we cross paths in another life.

Serious sadness, but still undying love,

Celeste

End of translation.

Goodbye.

Episode 40.1

-So She Made Her Own-

“I’m afraid you ain’t goin’ nowhere, bug.”
“I’m afraid you ain’t goin’ nowhere, bug.”

Spider-Man 2099 triumphantly balled up his fist.

“Yes!” He exclaimed. “Shock and awe, I finally did it!” He typed into the Alchamax Digital Translator Version 12.0 and pulled up a screen. He pressed print, and Celeste’s last diary entry began to make its way out of the computer. “That was the answer the whole time! Eileen was a mutant, the Extremis mixing with her X-Gene must have caused her to flip out and turn into Darkstream! Luckily, 2099 has no shortage of the cure for genetic mutation.” He snatched the file. He logged out of the machine and shut it down.

“I knew these things would come in handy!” He said, picking up the diary pages. “Now I just have to get that cure, hop back to 2013, and hope to shock I’m not too late!”

“I’m afraid you ain’t goin’ nowhere, bug.” A voice came from the shadows. Spider-Man 2099 quickly turned to see a cyborg emerge from the shadows. He had robotic left arm, two robotic legs, one robotic eye, a brown trench coat, and a western style cowboy hat. Next to him emerged a man in black and blue body armor. He had guns attached to his arms, as well as a flame thrower and retractable arm blades. He had a sword on his waist, a jet pack, and a frightening helmet that looked like that of a gladiator, with a visor down the middle.

“Venture!” Spider-Man 2099 said, assuming a fighting stance. “I see you finally figured out you can’t beat me by yourself.”

“Sloan’s decision.” He replied. “You and I both know I work better alone.”

“We’ll see about that.” Venture’s partner said. He stepped forward, aimed his wrists, and opened fire. Venture ran forward, taking out a collapsible bow staff. Using his superior agility, Spider-Man 2099 flipped around the room, dodging the bounty hunter’s fire and Venture’s onslaught.

“Venture, stop!” He pleaded. “What I’m doing here is for the greater good!”

“Really? ‘Cause it seems to me like you’re flippin’ through some girl’s diary!” He smacked Spider-Man 2099 with his bow staff. He slammed against the wall, and recovered quickly enough to jump onto it, barely avoiding the bounty hunter’s sword.

“Venture, haven’t you heard of the Dark Day?” He asked, dodging a rocket from the bounty hunter.

“Yeah, I heard of it,” Venture replied. “Who hasn’t?”

“Well, I’m trying to prevent it from happening! Think of the lives I can save!”

“Don’t affect me none. Unless you figure I’m gonna somehow get paid by lettin’ you change history, it don’t really matter to me.” He flipped up and swung his bow staff.

“I didn’t expect any you to understand.” Spider-Man 2099 said. Using accelerated vision, he slowed down time, just as both Venture and the bounty hunter were charging at him. He jumped off the wall and crashed through the window, then swung away. Time sped up for the two, and they both hit the wall. The bounty hunter quickly noticed the window, then rushed over and aimed a rocket at Spider-Man 2099.

“Collins!” Venture called. “Let him go.” The bounty hunter stopped. He took off his mask to reveal a rather handsome young man with slick black hair.

“Sloan’s not gonna be happy if we come back empty handed.” He said to Venture.

“We won’t.” Venture answered, holding up a small beeping monitor with a dot on it.

“Tracking device?”

“But of course. Shoot, we may even find out where the bug lives.”

“Wow, that was pretty smart.”

“Give me some credit boy, I’ve been doin’ this a while.”

“Well it’s good to know you’re not as dumb as you look.” Venture stopped. He turned to his partner.

“You listen good, boy.” He said. “The one thing I don’t like about you new age bounty hunters is that you all got lip on ya. It’d suit you well to mind your mouth.”

“I’m not afraid of you.” He said, sternly.

“Want me to make you afraid?” Venture asked. Suddenly their wrists began to beep.

“Venture, James, come in. Do you copy?” A voice said from their communicators. “Did you catch Spider-Man?”

“This is James.” Venture’s partner replied. “I copy. That’s a negative sir, we did not catch Spider-Man, but we’ve tagged him with a tracking device, he won’t get far.”

“Excellent.” Walker Sloan replied from the other end.

“With all due respect sir,” Venture said. “You let me drop the dead weight I’ll bring you the bug twice as fast.”

“I can’t let you do that Venture.” Sloan replied. “I know you say you work better alone, but your multiple failures in the past at the hands of Spider-Man suggest otherwise. I feel that a younger, completely human perspective will give you just the edge you need.” Venture grumbled under his breath.

“Whatever you say sir.” He said.

“Did you ever figure out what he was after and what connection he has to O’Hara?”

“Well sir,” James said. “He said that-”

“Sorry Sloan, but we didn’t figure out nothin’.” Venture interrupted. “Far as I can tell bug probably knew the girl or somethin’.” James looked at Venture, who looked right back at James.

“Alright then, keep me posted.” Sloan said, cutting the transmission.

“Why didn’t you tell him what Spider-Man was trying to do?” James asked.

“Rule number one boy,” Venture answered. “Only give the client what he’s payin’ you for. He paid us to wrangle the spider. He wants intel, well, he’s gonna have to cough up more cash.”

“Whatever.” James said. “Let’s just follow the signal and bring in Spider-Man.”

“Where’s your thrill of the hunt?” Venture asked, smiling. “Give it time, let the bug settle down, think he’s in the clear. Then we hit him when he ain’t lookin’. He’ll never see us comin’.”

“I’d rather go now.” James insisted. Venture growled.

“Listen boy, I don’t like you much.”

“Yeah, feelings mutual.”

“But since Sloan’s forcin’ us to work together, we’re gonna play by my rules. Got it?”

“Isn’t it your rules that let Spider-Man escape over 50 times?” Venture extended his bow staff just long enough that it stopped at James’s neck.

“Like I said, too much lip.” James knocked it away and put his helmet on.

“Fine, your rules.” He said. “But if you screw up, we’re playing by mine.”

“Fine by me.” Venture said. James activated his jet pack and flew off. Venture looked at the diary entries.

“Best hold on to these.” He said, stashing them in his pocket. “For safe keepin’.”

"Using accelerated vision, he slowed down time, just as both Venture and the bounty hunter were charging at him. He jumped off the wall and crashed through the window, then swung away."

* * *

Spider-Man 2099 swung through the city.

“I know it was around here somewhere…” He said. He jumped onto a hover car. He tapped his wrist and pulled out a holo-map. “Should be this way…”

“Hey!” The driver of the car shouted. “Get off my car!”

“What? No free rides?” Spider-Man 2099 retorted, jumping off and swinging to a nearby wall. “Man, I really need to study up on the land marks of old New York. It has to be close. It’s one of the tallest…” He paused. “Was one of the tallest buildings in the world! Before sky scrapers became space scrapers!” He looked down and saw the tip of the Chrysler building. “Bingo!” He jumped down and freefell until he landed on a stone eagle. Due to decay, it crumbled beneath his feet.

“Yaah!” He screamed as he fell. He quickly spun a web and crashed through a window. He looked around. The building was deserted. “Hello?” He called. He made his way up a staircase. Pieces of it started to fall off.

“The whole shocking thing is coming apart…” He said. He leapt onto the wall and began to ascend. Then he reached the ceiling of the top floor, a deserted office space. “This isn’t right…” He said. “According to Lyla, it should be…” Suddenly an elevator dinged. He looked in confusion. “An elevator? In order?” He dropped to the ground. He began to walk towards it when suddenly a man leapt out and tackled him to the ground. Spider-Man 2099 reversed the attack and threw the man against the wall. He got a good look at him as the moonlight shone through the window. The man attacking him looked exactly like Josh.

“Are you Charlie Westbrook?” He asked.

“Who are you?” The man asked, drawing a Repulsor Blaster. “And how do you know my name?” Spider-Man 2099 took off his mask.

“My name is Miguel O’Hara, I’m Spider-Man.” Charlie paused.

“Spider-Man?” He asked. “I love Spider-Man.”

“Oh, nice to know I have a fan,” Miguel replied. “Listen, I need to talk to you. I think I’ve figured out a way to prevent the Dark Day.” Charlie’s eyes widened.

“You have?” Suddenly a hover car flew by, shining a spotlight through the window. “Get down!” Miguel and Charlie hit the floor as it slowly passed by. Charlie stood up. “We can talk, but not here, too many Public Eye Patrol. This way.” They walked into the elevator. Charlie pressed the up button.

“This is the top floor.” Miguel observed. Charlie smiled.

“That’s what you think.” A scanner came out of the wall, and Charlie scanned an ID card. The elevator beeped and began to ascend. Finally, it stopped and opened. Miguel stepped out and stared in amazement.

“No shocking way…” He said. Inside of the top part of the Chrysler building was an entire lair. Complete with computers, hover cars, jets, weapons, and anything else imaginable. Charlie walked in.

“Welcome to the home of the Extremely Gifted Guardians.” He said. “Welcome to E.G.G!”
